Behind the MUSIC
“Christmas At Last” was recorded during the Pandemic in Hollywood.
During the year, most recording studios were closed and musicians all around the world, out of work.
We reached out to friends and gathered a tight group of top Hollywood studio musicians who were willing, if not EAGER, to step into the studio. Everyone was longing to play and very generous in sharing their talents.
Our musicians arrived in their masks. United Recording on Sunset Boulevard was bound by Covid restrictions. The studio was required to continually run air filters in every recording area and limit the control room to only three people at a time. The precautions made it very difficult to work. At the same time, everyone was very committed to making music, especially for Christmas. The unique performances you hear on this album emerged because of the commitment of our musicians and singers, and the perseverance of our entire team to get to the finish.
Special thanks to Rich Ruttenberg, Bob Sheppard, Trey Henry, Bob Ferraro, Michael Stevers, Josefina Vergara, Robert Thiem, and especially singer Dorian Holley for joining me in our fabulous duet. Kenneth Cope interrupted his own important project, just to sing a few important phrases with me on just one song!
Together, we made it.
At Funk Recording in Salt Lake City:
Many thanks to Masa Fukuda and the 40 children and families from The One Voice Children’s Choir who came in masks and were so eager to sing. Deep gratitude to the brilliant members of The Utah Symphony and The Temple Square Orchestra who united and very cautiously socially-distanced in a giant recording studio creating a marvelous and unique orchestra.
Funk Recording expanded every inch of its multiple studios so that we could record our big and complex arrangements LIVE, complete with strings, woodwinds, horns AND children! In California, restrictions were so tight that it was almost impossible to seat an orchestra. In Utah, musicians could still gather if proper precautions were taken. We are so grateful to all of the musicians who hungered to pick up their instruments and were so willing. Thanks to you all for generously participating on this album.
We hope all of these efforts, and all of their amazing talents will be enjoyed this season, and for many seasons to come.

Away In A Manger - William J. Kirkpatrick
Acoustic Piano & Arr. By Sonja Eddings Brown,
Orchestrated by Brad G. Smith
I arranged this beloved song in 2019 for a Christmas performance. I just love the way it fell into place. Brad Smith’s orchestration lifted my piano arrangement to an exquisite level. The lyrics, “Bless all the dear children in thy tender care” always remind me of the many innocent children’s faces I’ve known in the poorest neighborhoods of Los Angeles. As I sing? I am always thinking and praying that heaven does have an eye on children everywhere.
Still Still Still – Vinzenz Maria Süß
Arr. By Mack Wilberg / Adapted By Brad G. Smith
This Austrian carol I first learned from my mother, who had a beautiful soprano voice. She learned “Still Still Still” in her Austrian village choir as a young girl. Masa Fukuda and his brilliant One Voice Children’s Choir makes you feel like you are on a hill with stars and shepherds. The great Mack Wilberg gave birth to this arrangement, but Brad Smith adapts it beautifully for vocal solo.
I’ve Got Your Love To Keep Me Warm – Irving Berlin
Arrangement By Matt Harris
Written in 1937 by Irving Berlin for the movie “On The Avenue” with Dick Powell and Alice Faye. I have updated the piece a bit for the 21st Century, and it just gives me such joy to sing it! Our band of generous players, Rich Ruttenberg, a pianist for Streisand, Bob Sheppard a favorite of Stevie Wonder’s on saxophone, John Ferraro on drums and the great Trey Henry on upright bass, get the credit for the song’s wonderful groove. Matt Harris? FABULOUS arrangement.
I’ll Be Home For Christmas – Walter Kent/Kim Gannon
Arr. Brad Smith
Previously recorded in 2016, we produced this great arrangement at the old A&M Records’ Studio B in Hollywood. Carole King’s “Tapestry” album was recorded there. John Lennon, Joni Mitchell, The Carpenters, Quincy Jones, Sting, Stevie Wonder, and dozens of others made historic records in that room. It was a privilege to pull out their well-used tube microphones….and sing. Artists still book the room simply? For good luck.

Arr. by Bill Elliott
This great piece was nearly abandoned. I started composing “Christmas At Last” during production, when I couldn’t sleep. It was still unfinished when recording began in Los Angeles. Sitting alone at 6:30am at an out-of-tune grand piano, in a Los Angeles grand lobby, the last lines finally came.
I nearly shelved the song thinking it was a near miss. Tony Award -winning arranger Bill Elliott and LA copyist Liz Finch heard my rough recording and joined my daughter Abby in encouraging that I record it. Bill worked through the night to make sure “Christmas At Last” was completed on time.
Count Your Blessings/White Christmas – Irving Berlin
Arr. Bill Elliott, Featuring Concert Pianist Robert Thiem
Arranger Bill Elliott lifts us all onto the set of Paramount’s movie “White Christmas” with his stunning arrangement. I hope you truly enjoy it. Such a privilege to sing this much-loved standard. Rosemary Clooney starred with Bing Crosby in this famous movie. I was lucky enough to meet her when she was still performing in concert. We must have talked for two hours! She was such a spectacular person, and a woman who “never knew a stranger.” Thanks Bill for an astonishing arrangement of these two songs from a movie that always means….Christmas has arrived.
Stars Were Gleaming - Polish Carol/Nancy Byrd Turner
Arr. Brad Smith
Often known as “Infant Lowly, Infant Holy” the updated lyric of “Stars Were Gleaming” was written for children. Brad Smith crafted the arrangement contrasting my low alto with the authentic voices of The One Voice Children’s Choir. It was such a joy to sing with them. Such a stunning creation of Brad’s.
What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve – Frank Loesser
Arr. Brad Smith, With – Kenneth Cope
Sorry, I didn’t go to a single dance growing up! The lyrics of this song, and someone’s longing to be asked out for New Year’s Eve…resonates for too many of us! Love the melody too.
Winter Wonderland - Felix Bernard, Richard B. Smith
Arr. Brad Smith – Featuring – Dorian Holley
Dorian Holley joins me on this great duet. You have heard him belting out background vocals on Michael Jackson’s hits. Dorian has performed with Michael Jackson, Rod Stewart, Linda Rondstadt, James Taylor, Coldplay and others. He has been a vocal director on American Idol and other shows. Dorian’s great voice has such range and timbre. His heart is as big as his talent. A real treat to sing with you Dorian.
Til The Season Comes Round Again – John Jarvis/Randy Goodrum
Arr. Brad Smith
My mother passed away suddenly on Christmas Eve a few years ago. I had planned to sing “Til The Season’ for our family Christmas that year, but it went unsung. Its time has finally come. While it has been recorded by Kenny Rogers, Reba McEntire, and Amy Grant, it will always have special meaning to me. Cherish every holiday moment you have.

Frosted leaves have fallen
Dreams upon the tree
Bob and Bing are singin’
while we’re making memories
The kitchen’s filled with good intentions
Flour on the floor
Waiting for the sound of footsteps
Coming through the door…
CHORUS
And it’s Christmas once more
Counting all our years together
Growing up with one another
Wishing that this night
Could go on forever
And it’s Christmas once more.
Pinecones, glue and glitter
Wrapped by tiny hands
Hidden beneath the tree
So I can never see
Reliving Christmas tales
Of sleighs that can’t be late
Laying on your pillow
We can hardly wait…
CHORUS
BRIDGE
Streets are wet and stores are busy
Postman’s pouch is getting heavy
We rush from one thing to another
Eager for some peace and clutter….
The years ahead may be uncertain
Farewells to say
Empty chairs at dinner
Kids who move away
But there’s something about December
And every Christmas Day
We always see a station wagon coming up the way
CHORUS
And it’s Christmas once more
Cherishing our years together
A call away from one another
Knowing that our memories
Stay forever
It’s the Present… It’s our Past
It’s Christmas… at Last.
